The Sweet Smells of Sophisticated Science

On a lighter (scented) note… have you ever wondered how they make cosmetics and perfumes? The Creative Cosmetics kit explains the “Science of Skin Care.” Not only does this kit explain skin, nail, and hair care, it gives a broad “foundation” of dermatology and the chemistry of oils, gels and lotions. Your kids will get to create their own formulas with the cosmetic bases and natural ingredients you purchase from your local store. Kids learn hygiene and safety are essential for proper skin care, as well as how to apply their creations to their lips, eyes, face, and body. Learn the basics of beautiful, radiant skin!

Are You Green?

You have probably noticed that “Going Green” is all the rage right now with celebrities and major corporations. Meanwhile, we regular Joes and Josephines have been doing our part in reducing, re-using, recycling, and composting without cameras following us around (thank goodness). Think about what you are doing to help conserve Mother Earth. What do your kids know about being conservative with electricity and water? Do they know about renewable and non-renewable resources?

Oh My Oh My Oh AQUASAURS!

AquasaursLast week, my boys received a package in the mail - it was an Aquasaurs kit I had ordered.  An “Aquasaur” is a crustacean (named by the company, Uncle Milton, I assume) that dates back to prehistoric times.  It is a tiny organism that thrived in standing pools of water and could withstand years of inactivity and dry conditions in its egg state.  These hardy water-dwellers can be “hatched” in the right conditions and will grow to be about two inches in length, provided the conditions are right.

Spring is AGAIN in the Air!! (Naturalist Intelligence revisited)

It’s close to Springtime again and as such, we felt it was time to revisit the types of products that are available at WonderBrains to help your budding (no pun intended) Naturalist Child. We hope you enjoy!!

Well, it’s Spring time and for many of us, it’s time to say goodbye to dreary overcast winter days and say hello to warmer temperatures and maybe even more importantly FINALLY getting a chance to spend some quality time outside. Looking for educational toys and activities can be a challenge for parents, but the world outside provides ample opportunity to learn and experience.

When writing this article, I couldn’t help but take a moment to think about what a great time of year Spring is. If you live in a place that has discernible changes in your seasons, then it’s hard to dislike Spring. Life seems to return each and every year at this time and while many of us may enjoy the blooming of the trees and flowers, for Naturalist Intelligence-oriented people, Spring is the ULTIMATE!!

Space Shuttle Endeavour Lifts Off!

One of the most glorious things about living in central Florida is that we get to watch the space shuttle lift off into space on a semi-regular basis. Merritt Island, where WonderBrains resides, is also home to Cape Canaveral - in fact, our warehouse is about 6 miles south of the Kennedy Center Visitor Complex. So we can watch every shuttle launch from work or our homes. Read more…

Noodles Of Fun

I was reminded by a blogging friend of mine of a great activity for kids on spaghetti night (or really any kind of pasta).  If you have extra noodles at the end of the meal (or cook a bit more to save for later), you can add an extra ingredient or two and make it an amazing sensory experience for your child.  Just add a little oil to keep the noodles from getting sticky and let them play!  You can tint the noodles safely with some flavored gelatin or drink mix, such as Kool Aid.  Put it all in a big bowl and see what your kids can come up with!

Not only is this a terrific experience in getting all ooey and gooey, but your children can explore the amazing “magic” of those powdered wonders like drink mixes and gelatins (they always manage to turn a color different than they look in powder form!).  And it is perfectly safe to taste if they dare!

Next time you’re thinking pasta for dinner, make a little more and let the sculpting begin!
